Challenges of production and use of biodiesel as an alternative to fossil fuels

Limitations of fossil fuel source and increased environmental concerns have drawn attentions to the necessity of alternative energy sources, especially biofuels such as biodiesel. Biodiesel is more considerable among other biofuels. Similarities between characteristics of biodiesel and petrodiesel make biodiesel one of the most promising alternatives for diesel fuels.Advantages of biodiesel compared with petrodiesel biodiesel contain at least 78% lower CO2, no Sulfur.Thus, application of biodiesel in a diesel engine drastically reduces unburnt hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and particulate matters. However, usage of biodiesel as an alternative fuel has some challenges. In this article, these challenges and bottlenecks were gathered and investigated.
