Feasibility study of reuse of industrial treated wastewater as the make-up stream in oil and gas industries

Document Type : Review

Abstract

Nowadays, energy conservation issue is being considered as a key factor in product cost reduction strategy for providing competitive advantages. In this paper, reuse of treated wastewater as one of the potential energy resources in conjunction with oil and gas industries, was assessed. Consequently, two approaches namely as; new technology application and direct application, were determined. According to the conceptual and economical analysis, the desired alternatives for new technology application and direct one got selected as reverse osmosis technology, and cooling tower make-up supply, respectively. The reverse osmosis technology involves the total capital cost of 7.9 million US$ for desalinating of 160 m3/h treated wastewater, by which the cost of desalinated water and payback period are equal to 3.25 $/m3 and 3 years, respectively.
