Widespread applications of oxygen and nitrogen especially in the oil, gas and petrochemical industries have put air separation process into the center of attention among researchers and artisans more than before. Employment of membrane technology is more attractive than other conventional technologies such as cryogenic distillation or pressure swing adsorption largely due to the low energy consumption, economy of scale as well as other notable advantages. Nevertheless, majority of the air separation processes in the Iranian industrial sectors are still based on cryogenic distillation which is considerably energy-intensive and costly. High mechanical stability, good chemical and thermal strength as well as high air separation performance have led to the widespread application of polysulfone-based membranes for separation and purification of air in recent years. The present article aims to provide an overview on the trends of design, fabrication and development of polysulfone-based membranes for air separation.
